What is Ethics?
We all have choices in the way we act, the decision we make. What does the ‘best’ decision look like? Does it advance our own goals? Or is what others are doing? Ethics essentially relates to our core values, principles and purpose. What values do we seek to protect? Principles outline the ways we can achieve our values. And purpose is our reason for living.
What is the right direction?
If the choice you made became a headline on the ABC website tomorrow how would you feel? The choices we make can make the world a better place for all. Are we willing to hold ourselves to the same standards that others hold themselves to or are you above everyone else? Are you special? How do your actions affect the culture of the organisation?
Moral disagreement is common, the way we reach the answer is what is important. Is it based on: sincerity, rationality, competency and honesty?
Why do we have an Ethics and Trademarks Committee (ETC)?
AIM: Uphold ethical standards. To protect teachers and students
To ensure there is an understanding of ethics in yoga and what that means in terms of ethical behaviour for teachers, trainees, students and general members.
What our role is:
- Develop ethical guidelines in relation to current environment (eg fair representation and inclusivity of all, eg minorities).
- Ensure ethical guidelines are communicated and understood by the Iyengar Yoga community.
- Ensure and protect appropriate usage of the term ‘Iyengar’ and the Trade marks by eligible currently certified teachers. We manage all aspects of the Certification Marks and Trade marks.
- Develop and periodically review the IYA Ethics Policies to ensure currency.
- Liaise with the other IYA committees to support the association proactively.
- IYA member relations – adherence to ethical standards.
- Handle complaints in relation to ethical standards, as per the Complaints Handling Procedure.
Four stages of complaint resolution:
- Dialogue between parties
- Mediation
- Investigation
The ETC provides a clear process to ensure all teachers, trainees, students and members of the public have a voice in making a complaint against an Iyengar Yoga teacher. This process is clearly set out in the Ethics policy documents that are found on the IYA website. All certified Iyengar Yoga teachers have an obligation to be familiar with these documents.
How many of you are familiar with these documents?
The Ethics Committee is made up of a group of volunteers who are IY teachers. The work we do is directed and supported by these documents.
